Utility Field Trainee
Purpose of Job: Performs a variety of administrative, skilled, technical and maintenance work operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of District water, sewer, irrigation, street and storm drainage facilities and systems work requiring the use of hand tools, light equipment and vehicles.
Essential Job Duties: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of skilled work in servicing, maintaining, and repairing utility underground and above ground pipes, lines, meters, and sewer and water equipment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in a variety of skilled work in servicing, maintaining, and repairing utility underground and above ground pipes, lines, meters, and sewer and water equipment.
- Responsible for responding to work orders as assigned.
- Repair, adjust, service, test and replace equipment using hand tools and test equipment as required.
- Perform hydrant flushing to clear potable water lines and maintains records for same.
- Assist in the inspect new construction of sub-divisions, utilities, drainage, and assists with final inspection.
- Installation and repairs for potable and reuse water meters.
- Assist maintaining irrigation pumps, monitoring stations, wells, and equipment.
- Will be required to be on call 24/7 unless otherwise documented in the “on-call” roster upon successful completion of six-month probationary period.
- Assist in performing work for the Districts National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permit (NPDES) collecting data and assisting in maintaining records for reporting data to the Florida Department of Health (DOH), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and South Florida Water Management District. (SFWMD) Provide daily reports to the Field Supervisor outlining status of service work done to the utilities systems.
- Attend quarterly training covering utilities systems and operations.
- Perform other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be able to obtain several Licenses and Certificates.
- General mechanical knowledge and aptitude.
- Knowledge of computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, record keeping, and spreadsheet programs.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Work independently within the established policies and procedures of the department.
- Communicate orally in the English language in a one-on-one or group setting.
- Work cooperatively with staff and public.
- Work weekends, varied shifts and odd hours to maintain the District equipment and systems.
- Perform heavy utilities repair work and lift 50lbs.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent, and four years of progressively responsible related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must be licensed as a Water Distribution System Operator by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) within one year of hire. Classes and fees for licensing and training for the state exam paid for by the District. May require travel.

Merit based, experience-based pay scales. Each District field staff will be expected to cross train and become proficient in other related fields of a public utility system. Excellent room for career advancement into supervisory roles and many opportunities to increase base pay.
District utility field staff work on an “on-call “, rotating schedule. Field staff is paid for their one week of on-call and receive overtime, mileage reimbursement for calls requiring after hour responses.
District field staff must be able to work overtime, weekends, if needed and after hours in the event of an emergency. (power outage, water-sewer outage)
Must be able to work as a team and within a team based, small government operation. A unique opportunity for the right person with the right skill set. Will work with individuals with a strong plumbing, concrete, road repair background and no government/public utility experience.
Must be willing to learn all facets of a public utility operation.
Salary is based on experience and work history. All references will be verified. $12 to $16 per hour to start with numerous opportunities for emergency pay, overtime and on-call pay.
