County Approves Round About at Griffin Dr & Commerce Lakes Dr
Gateway Traffic Improvements approved unanimously 4-0. Commissioner Manning was absent.
In an effort to address residents’ concerns regarding traffic on Gateway Boulevard, I have been working with our DOT staff these past couple years to push for both safe and efficient transportation improvements in our community.
As a Gateway resident myself and frequent traveler of this main roadway, I am pleased to announce that during our County Commission meeting next Tuesday, March 19, we will be voting on two items for transportation improvements in the area.
1) Approve Contract for Design of Gateway Blvd. and Commerce Lakes Dr. Intersection Improvements– Upon approval by majority of the Board, design and permitting for improvements at this intersection will be underway. After considerable review of the current traffic volumes at this intersection, DOT has concluded that a roundabout will be the most efficient and effective enhancement addressing safety and time delays.
2) Approve Contract for Design of Gateway Blvd. and Griffin Dr. Intersection Improvements– Upon approval by majority of the Board, design and permitting for improvements at this intersection will be underway. Increased traffic volumes have attributed to accidents at this intersection and a roundabout has been deemed the most safe and efficient alternative.
Funding for the design of these projects is already budgeted within our Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for Transportation.
The next phase requiring Board approval will be for the construction of Gateway Blvd. and Commerce Lakes Dr. in FY 2020 followed by the construction of Gateway Blvd. and Griffin Dr. in FY 2021. Construction is expected to begin FY ‘19-20 for Commerce Lakes Dr. and FY ‘20-21 for Griffin Dr., with about $2.8 million budgeted overall for the two projects.
